Wooden Boat School Programs

In the 2023-2024 school year, we began teaching boat-building lessons to middle school students in Northumberland County. The goal was to introduce students to the fundamentals of woodworking and boat construction.

Throughout the program, students learned how to use basic tools, techniques and processes to build small wooden boats while exploring the scientific and mathematical principles essential to boat design. This hands-on approach not only developed their technical skills but also fostered problem-solving, teamwork, and creativity.

In the summer, the boats got bigger, and the students moved to work at the RFM boat shop to build full size wooden flat bottomed skiffs.

From these beginnings the Wooden Boat School continues to grow in Northumberland County, with conversations to help enable our youth throughout the Northern Neck Virginia.
