What Is a Cardboard Regatta?

A cardboard regatta is an exciting and often hilarious race where participants build boats entirely out of cardboard, then attempt to paddle their creations across the water without sinking. Teams construct their boats using ingenuity, teamwork, and a little bit of luck, then put them to the test in a friendly (and sometimes soggy) competition. It’s a fantastic way to learn about boat design, have fun with family and friends, and enjoy a great day by the water.

Why Participate?

  • Build It & Sail It! Experience the thrill of designing and constructing your own boat, then see if it floats or sinks in a splashy showdown.

  • Fun for All Ages – Whether you're a kid, a teenager, or an adult, this event is perfect for anyone looking for adventure and laughter.

  • Team Spirit & Creativity – Gather a group of friends, family members, coworkers, or classmates and put your teamwork and creativity to the test.

  • Prizes & Bragging Rights – Compete for awards like Fastest Boat, Best Design, Most Spectacular Sinking, and Fan Favorite!

  • Support a Great Cause – Proceeds from the event will help fund future programs at the Northern Neck Wooden Boat School, promoting hands-on learning in maritime craftsmanship.

How to Get Involved

  1. Form Your Crew – Assemble a team of builders, sailors, and cheerleaders.

  2. Build Your Boat – Using only cardboard and duct tape, craft a vessel that will (hopefully) stay afloat.

  3. Register Your Team – Sign up in advance to secure your spot in the race.

  4. Join the Fun on Race Day – Bring your boat to the Reedville Fishermen’s Museum, where the regatta will kick off with a lively launch, exciting races, and a celebration of all things nautical!
