Northumberland Middle School
Northumberland County Public Schools students engage in a hands-on curriculum that integrates mathematics, science, and engineering through the art of boat building. This unique program, in partnership with the Northern Neck Wooden Boat School (NNK-WBS), offers students a progressive learning experience that builds both technical and problem-solving skills.Students begin their journey with small-scale projects, learning fundamental principles of buoyancy, stability, and hydrodynamics. As they progress, they develop essential STEM skills.
Algorithms, Techniques, and Problem Solving
The students use a wealth of techniques and approaches to design, and define the boat models. Some are traditional concepts that have been used for centuries, some are more contemporary innovations.
Modeling and Simulation
They learn the basic physics of boats like buoyancy, resistance, and turbulence. They also look the usefulness of math calculations like area and volume.
Digital Tools
As the students progress through the program, they begin to use tools that the professionals would use, like Computer Aided Design (CAD)
Hands On Testing and Results Measurement
The students not only build models, but they put them to the test and observe how various designs and mechanisms impact the success of their models.
