6th Grade Classes
At Northumberland Middle School, sixth-grade students are getting a hands-on introduction to the fundamental principles of boat building, thanks to dedicated volunteers from the Northern Neck Wooden Boat School (NNWBS). This engaging program is designed to align with their curriculum, reinforcing key concepts in engineering, math, and science while fostering practical skills and problem-solving abilities.
Engineering, Math, and Science in Action
The sixth-grade curriculum includes critical topics such as the engineering design process, measurement techniques, and key physical science concepts like volume, area, perimeter, mass, buoyancy, displacement, and density. The NNWBS volunteers bring these lessons to life by guiding students through a series of interactive projects that demonstrate how these principles apply to real-world boat construction.
In the classroom
Hands-On Learning with Foil and Wooden Boats
Students begin their journey by constructing foil boats, an exercise that allows them to experiment with different designs to understand buoyancy and displacement. They refine their initial prototypes through iteration, learning firsthand how small changes can significantly impact performance.
Building on this foundational knowledge, students move on to constructing wooden sailboats. This project introduces them to the use of basic hand tools, including hammers, screwdrivers, and hand saws, helping them develop essential craftsmanship skills. Proper measurement techniques are emphasized throughout, reinforcing accuracy and precision—key components of both boat building and STEM education.
Outside the classroom
Testing in the Tow Tank
Once the wooden boat models are completed, students have the exciting opportunity to test them in a tow tank. Originally built by David Clark for the Reedville Fisherman’s Museum, this specialized tank allows students to observe the effects of friction and wave-making drag on their vessels. Seeing their boats in action provides a deeper understanding of the forces at play in marine engineering.
A Fun and Educational Experience
This collaboration between the NNWBS and Northumberland Middle School is a perfect example of how hands-on learning can make abstract concepts more tangible and engaging. By applying classroom knowledge to a real-world project, students not only strengthen their understanding of engineering and physics but also gain confidence in their ability to use tools and solve practical problems.
With the enthusiasm and expertise of the NNWBS volunteers, these young learners are developing skills that will serve them well in future academic and career pursuits. More importantly, they’re having a fantastic time doing it!
