7th Grade Classroom

Building upon the foundational boat-building concepts introduced in 6th grade, the 7th-grade curriculum expands students' understanding of boat construction, design, and technology. Students will engage in the following activities.

Traditional Methods

Identify and Label Boat Parts

Students will learn to recognize and label key boat components, including the bow, breasthook, chine, inwhale, keel, outwhale, rib, skeg, stem, stern, transom, midship, stations, and the concept of lofting. This vocabulary will help students communicate effectively about boat construction.

Introduction to Lofting

Students will explore lofting, the process of drawing a boat’s lines full-size to ensure accuracy in shaping and assembling parts. Through hands-on activities, they will practice transferring scaled drawings into full-scale layouts.

Digital Tools

Model Boat Construction

Applying their knowledge, students will construct a model boat using traditional boat-building techniques, reinforcing their understanding of structure and design.

3D Printing and CAD Design

Integrating modern technology, students will use CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software to create digital boat models. These designs will be 3D printed, allowing students to see how digital models translate into physical forms.

Through this curriculum, students will deepen their understanding of boat-building principles while incorporating design thinking and technology to enhance their learning experience, thanks to the volunteers of the NNK-WBS.
